STIIMA - Milano: RTD&I Labs

Industrial Robotics Lab

In the Industrial Robotic Lab both R&D activities and technology transfer activities involving cooperation with automation and robotics leading companies (such as COMAU, KUKA, ABB and Adige) are carried out. The laboratory is equipped with all the tools necessary for the planning and development of hardware and software components for industrial robotics, focusing especially on Linux Real Time Patch Xenomai-based embedded systems. The main activities concern the development of: laser 3D scanning systems, devices for industrial robot control and for intuitive programming of robots (MGD - manual guidance device); embedded systems for manipulator movement control and laser cutting process monitoring and control. This laboratory is able to autonomously develop industrial prototypes in all these fields. As regards testing infrastructure, this lab can count on the following equipment: Robot IRB 1400 (ABB); Robot Smart NS16 characterized by c4g open control system, wireless TP and manual guidance device (Comau Robotica); PKM Morpheum and pc-based control system conceived by the institute researchers and equipped with QNX 4 operating system; different 3D laser scanning systems; multicore Cluster system for Linux technology-based intensive computation applications; station for sizing of 3D laser scanning systems; oscilloscope and logical state analyser 500MHz Tektronix MSO4054; Gw Instek SFG-2020 function generator; pc-cards development platform.

Service Robotics Lab

The Service Robotics Lab develops hardware and software devoted to interaction between man and robots (as for instance voice-recognition ones, intuitive programming and vision systems) and aims at making robot systems easier to use and integrate, both in terms of assistive applications and in industry. The available equipment consists of collaborative robots, vision and voice recognition systems.

Virtual and Augmented Reality Lab

The Virtual and Augmented Reality Lab holds a 3D projector, Workstations, 5th glove interaction gloves, polemus sensors for tracking, stereoscopic vision glasses, VR and AR environment software, device for visual display of shoes in VR (Magic Mirror).

Mechatronics Lab

The Mechatronics Lab holds the activities related to experimental characterization of controlled mechanical systems and prototype development of cyber physical components for machines and plants. This lab is equipped with hardware and software tools for experimental modal and vibrometer analysis of mechanical structures, characterization of energy consumption of industrial machinery and their static and geometric testing. It also holds tools for developing “edge-computing” embedded systems, which enable decentralized elaboration of signals coming from distributed sensors. This laboratory is recently widening its scope towards high speed imaging for fast process analyses (concerning for instance shaving removal) and for visual vibrometer ones (Motion Magnification).

Micro Robotics Lab

The Micro Robotic Lab is equipped with basic tools (voltage sources and amplifiers, optical microscopes) for micro device functional testing (mechanical, capillary and electrostatic grippers). A micro assembly prototype cell is moreover being developed: it includes a micro positioning x-y-z system, a vision system with controlled environmental parameters (especially temperature and humidity). This laboratory belongs to the Lombardy Excellence Network Instrumental Mechanics (ReMS), a project which is being negotiated with the Lombardy Region, and actively cooperates with SAMM Lab, University of Florida and ARRI Lab, University of Texas Arlington, USA.

Re-De Manufacturing Lab (Cell 1)

The activities carried out in this laboratory aim to develop simple, flexible and safe solutions for robotized macrosorting of end-of-life products, which are characterized by meaningful man-robot cooperation. The technologies developed concern motion planning algorithms within semistructured environments, safe man-robot iteration and advanced grasping system development.

Re-De Manufacturing Lab (Cell 2)

Cell 2 consists in a modular transport line, based on 15 pallet transporters, whose functional architecture is based on specific topological configuration and on implementation of low level control logics, which are implemented on PLC and make the transport line flexible in terms of pallet movement. Based on these characteristics, the line transport functioning, that is pallet transportation, is transferred to model based advanced control algorithms, which are the topics research in Cell 2.

Teaching Factory

The Teaching Factory is composed by equipped areas and tools whose aim is training industry and academic staff. The beneficiaries in the industrial sector are skilled operators (entrepreneurs, managers and collaborators) who are interested in enhancing or updating their knowledge in terms of technologies used or to be used in their companies (continuing vocational training). The beneficiaries in the academic sector are either students who acquire specific experience they can turn into credits or university researchers who are willing to use hardware structures to check the goodness of their studies through tests on real systems.

Engineering and Electronic Workshop

The engineering and electronic workshop is composed by: 5 axles CB Ferrari work station, CNC Nakamura lathe, 5 axles Matzura work station, several machines (lathes, cutters, drills, grinding machine, gulleting machine and many more).
