ISAF-Integrate Smart Assembly Factory

The Integrated Smart Assembly Factory (ISAF) project aims at solving the challenge of coupling two or more parts in composite materials, both big and small, affected by intrinsic variability related to the production process. Assembling these parts by using connecting bodies (“fasteners”) lead to the formation of empty spaces “gap”, which constitute serious issues since the fastening operation induces stress that is distributed unevenly, reducing resistance to static and dynamic load. In order, to address this, it is necessary to compensate it with local fillers of appropriate thickness, shape and materials for avoiding damage. This requires, to date, a manual measurement of the gap, the production and adaptation in situ of compensation shims: all inefficient operations to perform in terms of quality, time and cost. For this reason, motivated by a drive for innovation, ISAF aims to: analyze the production process that is responsible of the inherent variability, aiming at the same time to identify all the constraints involved; study an automated and integrated solution for measuring and reduce/remove the gap with adaptive logic on the manufacturing tools realizing the parts; study automatic solutions for the in situ production of compensating shims after coupling of parts with additive/subtractive technologies, either with traditional or innovative material.
