The project aims at innovative approaches to the production of hulls of complex ships through the optimization of the production processes and the introduction of advanced quality control tools. These objectives are enabled by the new technologies of Industry 4.0 that will be brought to multisite production contexts.

Activities can be grouped into three key actions:
• The standardization of the production process and the definition of the best practices to be adopted at each stage of the production;
• The complete review of both process pre-tasks and quality controls of the hull production, defining new tolerances that must be respected at each stage, and introducing innovative tools to make the new process effective, fast, and sustainable;
• The introduction of simplified procedures and advanced training systems for personnel, based on new software components, also aiming to verify training levels.

Product and process quality control approaches will be investigated for the improvement of the quality of the highly complex structures that constitute the hull. For this purpose, complete sensing systems for the acquisition of data (e.g. high-resolution images) will be studied together with new processing modules, implementing innovative machine learning and/or deep learning techniques. The whole system will be designed to detect several types of surface defects and/or incorrect coupling between parts, to provide decision support to assist qualified operators.
