In addition to the training provided through research grants and scholarships, training also takes place in the field of PhDs.
Through framework agreements with various universities, the Institute sponsors PhD programmes and is also involved in the National PhD programme in Artificial Intelligence and the Industrial PhD programmes resulting from the agreement between CNR and Confindustria (Italian Industrialists’ Association).
The PhD programmes are sponsored by the Milan Polytechnic, Brescia University, Alma Mater Studiorum, Bari Polytechnic, Bari University.
The Institute also supports two National Doctorate programs
- The National Doctorate in Artificial Intelligence is divided into 5 federated doctorates that bring together 61 universities and research bodies. These doctorates, organised by a lead university and in collaboration with the CNR, have a common basis aimed at the foundations and development of AI and address as many areas of specialisation: Health and Life Sciences, Agriculture and Environment, Security and Cybersecurity, Industry 4.0, Society.
- The National Doctorate in Robotics and Intelligent Machines is structured in 6 curricula investigating the application of intelligent machines in different industries (Industry 4.0, agrifood, mobility and autonomous vehicles, healthcare and wellness of persons, inspection and maintenance of infrastructures, hostile and unstructured environments). Organised by the University of Genova, this national PhD programme gathers more than 20 universities and research bodies.
The Institute has three active PhD programmes, two in the context of AI for Industry 4.0 and one in the context of AI for Environment and Agriculture.
On the basis of an agreement entered into in 2017 between CNR and Confindustria (Italian Industrialists’ Association), Industrial Doctorate projects are co-funded (50% by CNR, 50% by the companies involved) with a very high scientific profile and with particular requirements as regards quality, technological innovation, internationalisation on issues relevant to the country.
